In conversation with Imbi Neeme | Upcoming governance gigs | Asking who's not in the room
Plus my November book giveaway and another thing about magical unicorns and Co-CEOs
In conversation with Imbi Neeme
What a privilege it was to talk to my pal Imbi Neeme about her beautiful new book, Kind Of, Sort Of, Maybe but Probably Not. The recording from the digital launch is now online for you to enjoy too.
Who’s not in the room?
I was also delighted to talk about culture, relationships and who’s (not) in the room at at (un)COMMON GROUND, the AMaGA 2024 National Conference in Ballarat on Wadawurrung Country in September.
The panel conversation with Ngaratya artist and curator Nici Cumpston and Georgia Cribb from Bunjil Place Gallery, ACMI’s Kate Ficai, Josephine Rout from the National Wool Museum and chair Chris McAuliffe considered the essential conversations that will reshape gallery and museum practice over the next several years. Here’s a quick clip…
Governance gigs
This month, I am thrilled to be heading back to Mpartwe/Alice Springs for the 2024 Meeting of Arts Professionals (MAPs) Conference. I’ll be speaking on Rethinking Arts Governance: we can do better! on Tuesday 19 and running a Governance Innovations workshop with Desart’s Philip Watkins on Wednesday 20 November 2024. Tickets are available from Arts NT.
Boards, if 2025 is the year you want to start governing differently, I have a few client slots available in November, December and January if anyone has budget allocations that need to be made before the end of the 2024 calendar year. Packages start from $350+ for board meeting provocations / professional development on why (nearly) everything you thought you knew about boards and governance is wrong - and what we can do to start governing beyond so-called ‘best practice’.
November book giveaway
Just in time for end-of-year book-giving season, everyone who subscribes to this enews in November will go in the draw to win a copy of The Relationship is the Project: a guide to working with communities.
With huge thanks to all of you who have already subscribed, you can also forward this email or share via the link below (and let me know) or repost my LinkedIn or Instagram promos for your chance to win too.
And another thing… on Co-CEOs
One of the silver(ish) linings of the past few years is the trend towards more arts, cultural and for-purpose organisations restructuring away from impossible 'magical unicorn' roles that ask too much of a single CEO, including to more Co-CEO models.
This is a fantastic recognition that these sort of CEO or Executive Director roles - particularly of small-to-medium (S2M) organisations - have always been too much for one person. But while exciting and important, this Co-CEO trend is not being allowed to achieve its potential gains - and can, in fact, defeat its own purpose by organisations (unintentionally) setting both Co-CEOs up to fail.
Boards, I’m sorry, but this is on you. Here’s an intro…
